Postcards For Fair Maps!

  • Better Half Coffee & Cocktails (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Let's gather for a fun evening and write some postcards for redistricting reform!

We know that change has to come in the way that we go about drawing voting districts in this state and that a process that introduces more transparency and that allows for more public input.....a process that takes the maps out of the hands of politicians looking to keep themselves and their party in power, is ultimately going to be a change that better serves Texas voters.

Join up with us on Feb 27th and let's make sure members of the Texas Legislature and Redistricting Committee know we want fair maps!

Materials provided by Fair Maps Texas - You just bring you and some friends!

The people should pick their representative, but in Texas, politicians are picking their voters.

You've been cracked, Austin. You've been divided into six congressional districts that reach from Austin to Dallas, to Corpus Cristi, to San Antonio, and to Houston. We're going to bars in three of these districts. And they're all walking distance from each other.

Learn about why and how this came to be, why it's a problem for Austinites, and how to fix it. Walk with us on the Caps for Fair Maps Pub Crawl!

Gerrymeander Across Texas - San Antonio Town Hall

People of all political stripes are overwhelmingly opposed to having the outcomes of elections predetermined for them through unfair redistricting. In fact, a recent bipartisan poll found that 71% of Americans would like the Supreme Court to act to end partisan gerrymandering.

We must stop partisan politicians from manipulating voting maps to keep themselves and their party in power.

In America, elections are supposed to represent the will of the people, not politicians. But partisan politicians manipulate voting maps to keep themselves and their party in power. We need to reform the rules and make the process of drawing districts impartial, so that our government is of, by, and for the people.

The city of Austin has been cracked into SIX congressional districts. Do you know what your district looks like?

In fact, a recent bipartisan poll found that 71% of Americans would like the Supreme Court to act to end partisan gerrymandering. We believe that the people should pick their representative, instead of the politician picking their voters.

Inside Books is the only books-to-prisoners program in Texas, where over 140,000 people are incarcerated. Inside Books Project works to promote reading, literacy, and education among incarcerated individuals and to educate the general public on issues of incarceration.
Learn more about IBP here: https://insidebooksproject.org/

****

The event we're scheduling:

Let's get a small group of us together to go volunteer with IBP on April 19th from 7 - 10pm.
The first time you volunteer, you will need to arrive at 7pm to receive an orientation.

****

Information about Volunteer Nights:

Volunteers open letters from inmates, select books to best fit the request, and make packages of books to send back to each inmate.
The books selected by the volunteers become the personal property of each inmate. Reading the letters and creating the package to send back is intimate and rewarding work that helps foster literacy, education, and a sense of connection with the outside world in the prisoners you help.
Volunteer nights are fun, relaxed, and a great way to meet interesting people and make a real difference!

****

This is a very special and rewarding night of service to others so please join us on April 19th!
You must RSVP at txprogressiveaction@gmail.com to be part of our group in attendance.
Thank you!

Happy Hour + Redistricting Action Meet-up!

Come join us and Honest Elections for Texans for a drinks & eats/letter packing HH to support redistricting reform in our state! Meet us at Red's Porch on March 3rd and help us pack letters to go out to local businesses to build support for fair maps in Texas!

Partisan gridlock and lack of balanced governing brought on by gerrymandering of congressional and legislative districts doesn't just hurt the Texas constituency or our democracy. It also impacts Texas economic growth and we want to help build a coalition of Texas businesses and business leaders who support changes that call for transparency and more community input in the map drawing process.

We hope to see you there!  RSVP to txprogressiveaction@gmail.com

Town Hall w/Seattle Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda

  • Manchaca Road Branch, Austin Public Library (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for a town hall discussion with Seattle Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda on the Democracy Voucher program.

The Democracy Voucher program was designed to encourage a more diverse pool of candidates for elected office and ensure everyone has the opportunity to have his or her voice heard, not just the wealthy and political elite.

Adopted by Seattle in 2015 and put into practice in 2017, the voucher program has resulted in a marked change in the composition of who is contributing to city campaigns in Seattle. The voucher program has made the universe of donors to political campaigns more diverse and more balanced with regard to geography, gender and economic status.

In addition, the program has served to empower candidates who may have been superbly qualified in every way except having easy access to wealthy donors - like Councilwoman Mosqueda.

The City of Austin is currently reviewing a Democracy Voucher program proposal and it could be at item on the November ballot.

Hosted by Common Cause Texas, Public Citizen Texas, Texas Progressive Action Network and others.
