Speak Out Against Anti-Asylum Bill

Today we’re elevating this call to action by RAICES and encouraging you to tweet at members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to highlight:

  1. How bad the Secure and Protect Act of 2019 (S. 1494) is and

  2. That we can’t support legislation that rolls back protections for those fleeing danger to seek asylum and also fails (in every way) to address the actual issues resulting in what we’re seeing at the border.

From RAICES’s action alert:

This bill is catastrophic for those seeking refuge in the United States and particularly for children. RAICES and other humanitarian organizations including Human Rights First, International Rescue Committee, The Immigration Hub, and the Center for American Progress have already voiced strong opposition to this legislation that seeks to undermine both the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) and the Flores settlement meant to help create more humane asylum policies.

The Campaign for Children voiced their opposition in an open letter:

As an organization committed to the health and safety of all children in the United States we are extremely concerned with the attempts of both Congress and the Administration to undermine vital protections for children such as the Flores Settlement Agreement and the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) to allow for the prolonged detention of children and immediate repatriation of unaccompanied children to dangerous situations.
