Put Voters Back In Charge

This is a #calltoaction from Honest Elections For Texans and it’s urgent that you call or write your state representative and state senator TODAY!  You can find out who reps you here: http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/Home.aspx

See below:
We need a large, collective voice from our communities to tell the Legislature that it is not acceptable for them to ignore the *thousands* of calls and letters that we have made about Redistricting Reform (see script below.)

Yesterday, the Legislature released their Interim Charges, which is a list of areas that need to be researched between sessions. Redistricting reform was not included on this list, even as the state is caught up in a MULTI-MILLION dollar suit over our election maps. It is very clear that BOTH the Legislature and the Judicial System are incapable of drawing our districts fairly. Both avenues have resulted in maps being overturned and stuck in the legal system for YEARS. In the meantime, we are left with districts that fracture our communities, leaving us without a cohesive voice of representation to address our needs.

Legislators know exactly what is at stake with these maps and will do everything in their power to maintain control of the map-drawing process. Because partisan gerrymandering allows legislators to draw “safe” districts for themselves, voters have no way to hold these elected officials ACCOUNTABLE THROUGH THE POWER OF OUR VOTE. Such a system has produced an unhealthy form of competition that has led to the polarization of our state and created gridlock and inaction. IT HAS CREATED A SYSTEM IN WHICH PARTISAN SUCCESS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN GOOD GOVERNMENT PRACTICES.

Please call your state representative and senator on MONDAY, OCTOBER 30th and let them know that we are organizing, and we want to put the VOTERS BACK IN CHARGE.

Suggested Script:

“I am a constituent of XXXX, and I am extremely concerned that the Legislature ignored the *thousands* of calls that were made by Texans in support of Redistricting Reform. I am disappointed that it was not included on the list of Interim Charges, even as the state is caught up in a MULTI-MILLION dollar suit over our election maps. Like you, I value the integrity of my vote, and I question the Legislature’s intent when they draw election maps that serve their needs and not the people’s. This has left our communities without a cohesive voice of representation.

Our current election maps undermine our ability to hold our elected officials ACCOUNTABLE THROUGH THE POWER OF OUR VOTE. This has produced an unhealthy form of competition IN WHICH PARTISAN SUCCESS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN GOOD GOVERNMENT PRACTICES.

We are asking XXX to fight for those that they represent and support redistricting reform that would place limits on partisan involvement, increase public transparency, and ensure that our communities are not divided.”
